Scarlett South is an autism specialist, registered nurse and author or Autistic or Toxic? How I Unlocked the Mystery of My Son’s “Autism.”
Scarlett South is an autism specialist. I’ve been researching what causes autism since my son, Luke, was diagnosed with the disorder when he was three years old. Through many trials, and much error, I stumbled upon the key that unlocked the mystery of my son’s autism.
My objective is to shed some light onto the mysterious world of autism, and to tell you how to beat this baffling disorder. My writing on autism has been published in Autism Parenting magazine. http://www.autismparentingmagazine.com
After two years of grueling research and many rewrites, my book Autistic or Toxic? How I Unlocked the Mystery of My Son’s “Autism” is finally ready for publication. It’s 152 pages chock-full of treatments that didn’t work for us, what did work for us, and a happy ending that is a guaranteed tearjerker. It also has a checklist of what to do if you find out that your child or loved one has been diagnosed with autism.
Autistic or Toxic? begins with the birth of Luke and the death of his twin shortly after. It chronicles the ravaging effects autism had on our family, and the struggles Luke and I encountered along the way as we stumbled along that elusive road called autism recovery.
Autism is treatable!
According to the CDC, 1 in 54 children has some form of autism. But maybe some of those who are labeled as being autistic aren’t really autistic at all… especially the level 1(highest functioning). Maybe it’s something medical, instead…something treatable.
Autistic or Toxic? explores other reasons for autistic behaviors other than autism. I disagreed with Luke’s doctors when they told me that he was autistic, insisting that it was a medical issue. I just had no clue what that medical issue was. I dragged Luke to countless doctors, with little results. When Luke was around seven, a light went off in my head, as if someone had illuminated a path for me. I took him to an environmental doctor, who discovered what was really going on with him, and put him on the road to autism recovery.
Early intervention is crucial!
I didn’t find out what was really wrong with Luke until he was 7 years old. By that time, the damage to his organs was extensive, and some of it was irreversible. If I had started his treatment when I first started noticing autistic tendencies in him, the outcome would have been much better for him at a younger age.
Luke is now a young adult. He lives independently and has a job. But most importantly of all, he’s a happy and healthy, productive member of society. And isn’t that what we want for all of our kids, autistic or not?
